The Brief
This brief asked for an original double-page spread from the chapter of an international cookbook that covered Indian cuisine. The spread needed to include both a recipe and to incorporate an illustration to introduce the chapter.
The Solution
The main illustration was created using hand-drawn pastel images, 60mm photographs of sari materials and hand-drawn Indian patterns which were digitally recreated in Adobe Illustrator. These were then all composited and set within a border inspired by the doorways and windows seen in Hindu temples.
Due to the intricate nature of the Indian pattern making, the sari materials and the pastel drawings used in the illustration, the type was placed on a plain white background to counteract the busy dynamism of the imagery. A delicate pencil illustration of Ganesh was also created to complement the elegance of the pure white page and counteract the complexities of the lead illustration.
