Role: Creative Director, Illustrator, Graphic Designer
The Brief
As a part of my work at Container Solutions, I was tasked with developing an event concept for the Software Circus brand, in which the company has partial ownership.
The brand already possessed a distinct identity through a series of successful past live events. Each had a unique theme, such as 'Space,' 'Steampunk,' and 'Winter Wonderland.' These events garnered a strong response from the community and proved to be profitable for lead generation hence another was planned. However, given the onset of the COVID pandemic at that time, it was decided that the event would be conducted online, presenting its own set of unique challenges.
The Solution
Upon studying the previous events, I observed that although the themes were enjoyable and successful in a live setting, they seemed to lack relevance to the presentation topics. In light of this, I took the decision to develop a concept that would specifically the single topic of the challenges and unexpected journeys engineers encounter while navigating complex problems of cloud technology. My solution was built around the idea of falling down a digital rabbit hole, which borrowed elements from the Alice in Wonderland story and combined them with elements of the matrix.
The intention was to effectively showcase the discussed topics, appeal to the engineering community's love for whimsicality, and craft a concept that appeared unique and 'otherworldly' setting it apart distinct from the generic tech conferences that saturated the virtual event space during the pandemic. This was accomplished by the use of a striking colour palette consisting of striking shades of pink, purple, and green, heavily influenced by psychedelia.
This idea of the digital rabbit hole became the basis for the design of the website with the hero image representing the entrance and then the lower part being the wonderland that the reader would find themselves in with Alice falling in the middle.
The event was attended by well over 1,000 individuals and was universally regarded as a triumph. It left a lasting impression on the community as a memorable occasion with exceptional content, while also proving to be an effective lead-generation tool for the company.
